Grade 5 Overview
Welcome! I hope all of you had a fantastic summer with your family, and that the promise of a wonderful autumn season will invigorate our sense of discovery. In order to shed some light on various classroom routines and expectations for the year I have sent this simple informative letter home with your child.
Take Home Assignment (homework) Folders
I will send homework packets home with your child about two times a month. You can feel free to hold onto the work unless it needs to be signed and returned. The packet and attached comments ( if needed) will indicate how your child is doing academically and socially here in grade five. (Note- you may also check homework in the various workbooks and copybooks that your student will be using here in grade five.) I also encourage you to contact me with questions regarding our grade five classroom and procedures.
If you would like to arrange a conference, please contact me here at school and we could arrange a time to meet. There are formal conferences scheduled in November, but please do not hesitate to seek me out for additional consultation. Email me at email@example.com
At any given time throughout the year your child could be working, writing, building, researching and creating any number of projects. I’ve met with great success in the past with project based learning here in grade five. Whether it be writing and presenting a report on their “Mystery City” or creating an actual board game based on a novel of their choosing, we will explore and nurture your child’s creativity.
It is very important that your child keep up with his/her assigned homework. At the end of each day write down all of the homework assignments in our daily planner. In addition to writing the homework down at the end of the

Preparation and Organization
These two skills are a linchpin to success at any level. Please make sure your child is equipped for success on a daily basis by arriving on time with all of his/her materials.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. It is my goal this year to prepare each student to meet every academic and social challenge that will come his or her way. As we enter this three-way partnership (student-teacher-parent) I look forward to seeing the growth and confidence that comes from hard work, good citizenship and academic accomplishment.
Thank you for your support,
Mr. Mark E. Smith
